The mission of SEARRP is to enable high quality pure and applied research in the rainforests of SE Asia. Our goal is to contribute not only to the science base, but also to the conservation and sustainable use of rainforests.
SEARRP does not fund individual research projects, but rather enables science to be done at Danum Valley by providing the necessary staff, facilities, infrastructure and management. We do this in collaboration with several Malaysian organisations including the Danum Valley Management Committee (which comprises a number of Malaysian government departments, universities, research institutes and NGOs), Yayasan Sabah, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, the Sabah Forestry Department and the Malaysian Meteorological Department.
The main services provided by SEARRP are:
- Pre-project planning and advice
- Guidance on the procedure for research applications to the Danum Valley Management Committee (DVMC) and Sabah Biodiversity Centre (SaBC) and visa requirements on entering Sabah
- Fieldwork support from our team of highly trained Research Assistants and other support staff
- Administrative and logistic support at Danum Valley, including the provision of vehicles for research use, computer and on-line services and labs
- The collection of climate, hydrological and other baseline data
- Health and safety back up and emergency response procedures
