If you are planning to conduct research in Sabah you must have permission to do so. For most SEARRP scientists this normally involves two applications – one to the Danum Valley or Maliau Basin Management Committee and one to the Sabah Biodiversity Centre (representing the State Government of Sabah). The procedure is explained in detail in the following sections. Please note that these applications should be made concurrently, if possible at least 6 months in advance of the proposed start date for your field research.
Although not obligatory, it also makes sense in the first instance, to apply for membership of the Royal Society SEARRP, as this will qualify you for preferential accommodation rates, a subsidised Research Assistant and vehicle use at Danum Valley and other SEARRP research sites and projects (including the SAFE Project). The SEARRP membership form can be downloaded here, and completed forms should be emailed to Prof. Rory Walsh, the SEARRP Research Coordinator. If you have any problems or queries then you can contact either Prof. Rory Walsh or Dr. Glen Reynolds.
Once your SEARRP application has been processed, you will be allocated a project number that needs to be included on the applications to the Danum Valley and/or Maliau Basin Management Committees.
Please bear in mind that applications for research approval have to be made individually – there is no procedure for approving multiple scientists working on the same project through one application.
Please also note that normally the person doing the fieldwork should apply for research approval – not (necessarily) the project PI/grant holder. In the case of MSc or PhD studies the student should apply; the project supervisor would not normally be expected to have their own research approval, unless they plan to make extended field visits (> 1 month).
