LABS

Danum Valley has 3 laboratories:

  • Analytical lab: This lab can accommodate 4 – 5 scientists at one time, is air-conditioned and includes standard items of research equipment including large drying ovens, a furnace, electronic balances, dissecting microscopes, a water distiller, fume cupboard, refrigerators, a freezer and a de-humidified store
  • Wet lab: This relatively large lab can accommodate 10 or more scientists at once, and was designed primarily for soil and hydrological analyses and the initial handling of bulky plant material. It includes several sinks, plenty of bench space and standard items of equipment for soil and water analysis including sediment filtration.
  • Teaching lab: This large laboratory has enough bench-space for groups of 30 or more students and was designed with university field courses in mind. It can also be used as a lecturing/demonstration space.

Full details of the laboratory and analytical equipment maintained at Danum Valley can be downloaded here.

LIBRARY, COMPUTING & ON-LINE SERVICES

The library at Danum Valley holds an excellent collection of specialist books relating to the flora, fauna and general natural history of Sabah and SE Asia and standard academic texts including many of the latest titles in the areas of statistical analysis, ecology, hydrology and conservation biology. The library also houses an extensive reprint collection which includes many papers published in the ‘grey’ literature, or in local journals, which may be difficult to find either in university libraries or on-line. Danum Valley subscribes to the JSTOR on-line journal archive.

Danum Valley has a network of PCs all of which have full-time broadband connection. Hardware is regularly upgraded. The PCs are loaded with standard word processing, spreadsheet, statistical and databasing packages – and scientists’ own specialist software can be loaded on request. The library and computer room have numerous network connection points for scientists’ own notebooks, all of which allow on-line access.

Details of the charges for use of the computing and on-line facilities can be found on the costs page.
